Many people thought that Tiger Woods would lose his No.1. but the scores do not come out, nobody would know the result.
Tiger Woods who like the taylormade burner superfast driver and Phil Mickelson, who are battling for the top ranking in golf, are nine shots behind leader Lee Westwood entering the third round of the Players Championship.
The 34-year-old Woods has been No. 1 in the Official World Golf Ranking for a record 558 weeks, including 258 straight. After missing time this season following his admission of marital infidelity and failing to make the 36-hole cut last week at the Quail Hollow Championship, he left Mickelson with a chance to pass him as the world’s top-ranked golfer.
Woods finished yesterday’s second round at TPC Sawgrass in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida, with a 1-under-par 71 following a 2-under opening round at golf’s richest event. Woods said: “I didn’t quite hit it as good today, and I haven’t played in a while”.
Mickelson, tied with Woods at 3-under 141 entering the third round, would assume the No. 1 ranking for the first time with a win this week at the PGA Tour’s premier event and a finish outside the top five by Woods.
Westwood, who finished second behind Mickelson in last month’s Masters Tournament, is 12-under for the tournament after a 7-under 65 yesterday.
Woods began play on the second nine holes yesterday, opening with a par on No. 10 before making bogey on the 11th, birdies on the 12th and 13th, a double-bogey at the par-4 14th and two more birdies on the 15th and 16th. He pared the 17th and 18th.
I like Tiger Woods, and hope he could keep his felling to keep No.1.
